Final Report Abstract

This project on fundamental research in German studies had the objective of producing a historically critical selection edition of the core texts of Jean Paul (1763-1825), with the aim of serving as a model for a future comprehensive scholarly edition of his complete works. The project encompassed the preparation of exemplary printed texts, including never-edited versions, and associated unknown manuscripts for a book edition. Moreover, solutions for commentation were to be developed due to the acknowledgement that it would be virtually impossible to provide comprehensive explanatory annotations for the vast corpus of Jean Paul's work. At the same time, all data had to be prepared and stored in a sustainably reusable structure for future digital use. With the development of the model edition, the prerequisites for a complete edition of Jean Paul within the framework of the German Academies Programme have been created. Thus a long-standing desideratum of research has been able to be dealt with, resulting in the initiation of a long-term academy project at the beginning of 2023. The model edition focused on an object whose editing depicts the history of editing in two respects. The Jean Paul Edition exemplifies the development of the idea of the classic edition in the course of the 20th century, as well as its transition, from the "classic" book edition to the portal concept, from the work to the genesis of the work. It concerned a classic that had never been comprehensively edited to this day. Related to this was the question of what could be "classical" in a literature that had already been considered by contemporaries more as a proliferating work than as a "work". Not only for pragmatic reasons due to its extent, but also because Jean Paul's first editor, Eduard Berend, who was persecuted by the Nazis, regarded the author as a classic, he edited his work only in parts: the "other" side of classical literature, which Jean Paul’s literature also is, had – in the form of the earlier text versions and the swarm of notes – no place in the main editorial presentation, which teleologically determined its systemic position within the edition concept. The task of the new model was thus to show how the "entire" Jean Paul could be edited, that is to say, to address the issues of the absence of an overarching editing and the absence of a perspective on the – to use a metaphor – resistant elements of Jean Paul's writing that do not align with the classical ideal. It was important to develop efficient editorial principles, both philologically and technically, with philology and digitality going hand in hand, as opposed to digital editions that can build on finished book editions. The research work demonstrated the process of literarizing ideas and thus the dimension and significance of the text workshop. It led to a correction of previous ideas about the author and at the same time to a self-correction of the edition, which founded a paradigm shift on the basis of the knowledge gained.
