Nachwuchsakademie "Materialwissenschaft, Werkstofftechnik, Charakterisierung, Simulation und Umformtechnik"

Subject Area Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term from 2012 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 217560764

Goal of the funding is to conduct a college for young researchers at the interface of materials science and engineering, characterization, simulation and forming. With this college the young researchers will be prepared to propose and to lead own research projects in a self-responsible way. Materials science and engineering, characterisation, simulation and forming are modern research areas that are characterized by a strong interdisciplinarity and internationality of the involved researchers. The bandwidth of active researchers reaches from natural sciences over mathematics to classical mechanical engineering. The used materials and technologies span a similarly widespread field with applications for functional and structural materials. Due to the mostly monodisciplinary education young researchers are rarely in contact with peers from other disciplines during the early phases of their careers. Hence, the potential synergies that lie in interdisciplinary networking are not systematically exploited. With the proposed young researcher college we aim to attract highly motivated young researchers in the final phase of their doctorates or in an early postdoc phase and to make them aware of the different ways of thinking in the different disciplines. Thus the meaning of interdisciplinary exchange of ideas shall be manifested. By establishing contact between young researchers in a similar phase of their careers, out-of-the-box thinking will be practiced and new approaches for joint research activities will be developed. Within the college the participants will gather first experience in self-responsible writing of interdisciplinary proposals for thord-party funding and in leading research projects.
