Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The objective of the project was to explore the possibility of forming dual functional polymers capable of showing fast antibacterial action of non-leaching contact-type and biodegradability. Emphasis was placed on (1) establishing new methods for combining antibacterial units with biodegradable polymers in order to get non-leaching antibacterial action and on (2) characterization of the resulting materials, especially with respect to their antibacterial, degradation and biocompatibility properties using standard and modified procedures. Several different strategies such as, click reactions, reactive blending, use of antibacterial macroinitiators were used for covalent attachment of antibacterial moieties with biodegradable polyesters in the form of varied macromolecular architectures. The new materials show fast antibacterial action against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Presence of antibacterial units affect degradation kinetics as observed by carrying out the enzymatic degradability and compostability tests without hindering overall degradation of polymers. For many application areas of biodegradable polymers like sutures, implants, wound coatings etc. on one side and packaging, food storage etc. on the other side, it is reasonable to have antibacterial functionality in addition to biodegradability and the materials studied in this project could be of great interest in future.
