In this project we investigate collective excitations and transport properties of different atomic wire systems. These two properties are intimately linked by charge densities and effective masses. Among others Au/Si(hhk), Au/Ge(100) and silicide wires play the central role. By changing systematically the step densities of the supports, strained epilayers, and coverage, the effect of wire coupling and its feedback to transport and plasmons are studied. Moreover, we use adsorbates for homo-hetero doping experiments as well as small and large molecules (O,H,CO, polycyclic aromatics, e.g. pentacene) to tune the carrier densities of the surface states as well as their coupling. Our approach is intimately related to the activities of the other projects.
