Central project: Coordination of the research unit

Subject Area Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term from 2012 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 200999873

The main objective of the central project is to coordinate the activities within the research group. Thus, it has no scientific programme of its own. Instead, it is designed to promote the scientific exchange between the subprojects and help the group reaching the common goals.Consequently, the central project has various tasks.a) It was advantageous that the raw material had been ordered centrally, as this had ensured that every subproject studied samples with identical history. Thus, we also propose to use this approach during the second period.b) The central project also organizes internal workshops every six month that bring together the PIs and the students to discuss the current status of the research. In addition, the students are trained on selected topics during some of the workshops.c) The web site of the research unit is also handled by the central project. This is not only helpful for visibility but allows for access to the group's research data. The latter aspect has been used extensively in the first period.d) A key task of the central project is to prepare the International Conference on High Temperature Shape Memory Alloys, which we plan to take place again near the end of the second funding period. This is an activity that is of major importance for the group's international visibility.e) The central project also coordinates the measures to promote equality between men and women in the scientific and academic communities. For instance, seminars given by highly visible female researchers that can act role-models will be organized.
