Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

Immune response in early lactation differs highly among cows, and may be a result of metabolic and endocrine changes. Individual immune response during transition period, indicated by lymphocyte proliferation, as affected by feed intake, milk performance, methane emission, metabolism, as well as lymphocyte activation in dairy cows were investigated. Cows differed markedly in the proliferative response, but not in the metabolic and endocrine status or in their lymphocyte activation. In cows lacking the energy to sustain the shift from lymphocyte activation to proliferation, disease susceptibility might be exacerbated because energy is spent without reaching host defense. Interestingly, a positive relationship between methane emission and immune response was observed. In vitro, lymphocyte from multiparous dairy cows before and after calving responded differently to five immune modulators used. In antepartum lymphocytes the modulators seem to represent an energy source or positive extrinsic signals to use nutrients for the activation process. Whereas for lymphocytes from postpartum cows, high BHB concentrations and high insulin concentrations seem to act as negative and positive signals for lymphocytes, respectively, to utilize nutrients for activation and proliferation.
