Structure-Property-Relations in Compressed Inorganic Glasses

Subject Area Synthesis and Properties of Functional Materials
Term from 2012 to 2014
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 230773965

During fabrication of a glass, considering not only cooling kinetics but also pressure enables generation of as-to-yet inaccessible combinations of properties: only inclusion of the pressure parameter allows a complete thermodynamic description of glassy materials where the glass transition can be achieved on arbitrary paths in the pTt-space. Such compressed glasses are the objects of the present research program. In the first program phase, pressure-induced property modifications, their structural and topological origin and potentials for novel property combinations were evaluated. Focus of the second project phase will now be on two topical areas: the macroscopic relevance of pressure-induced property modifications and levers for controlled and selective tuning of specific structural parameters, and the detailed exploration and evaluation of the effect of pressure on the evolution of topological heterogeneity in glasses.
