This DFG priority programme aims at answering the question: “What defines healthy and diseased thyroid function?” To this aim, THYROID TRANS ACT will decipher the actions of thyroid hormones (TH) comprising T4 and T3 and novel, endogenous thyroid hormone (TH) derivatives such as T2 and thyronamines (from “T4-T0”).THYROID TRANS ACT will• establish a network and coordinate the efforts of leading thyroid research laboratories and centers in Germany. This interdisciplinary consortium will have the tools, expertise and energy to successfully lead thyroid research in Germany through the transition from findings in mouse models to better treatment options for patients. It will also internationally strengthen the position of German scientists in this field of research.• guide and streamline the interactions between basic and translational research labs that add knowledge of “T4-T0” in healthy as well as in the diseased thyroid state to clinical scientists with the overall goal to obtain options for better management of patients with disorders related to “T4-T0” malfunction.• provide for the recruitment and training of excellent junior scientists to foster a strong position of German science in this emerging field of research. A special focus of our programme will be to promote and facilitate the return of leading German scientists in this field who are presently working abroad (brain gain).• launch and promote active and continued collaborative efforts and productive interactions with international thyroid research networks.
