The advancement of metrology as the science of precise and traceable measurement is the indispensable basis for future progress not only in natural sciences and technology, but also for trade and society. At the heart of metrology is traceability to the SI units as the establishment of a documented unbroken chain of calibrations complemented by the analysis of all contributions to uncertainty budgets. One of the emerging, but still very challenging topics is metrology of nanosystems, which are indispensable, e.g., in information science, lighting technology and medi-cine. Many important measurands of quantum- and nanometrology require novel concepts for traceability. For the second funding period, TU Braunschweig (TU BS) and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) propose to focus on new routes towards traceability of measurands in com-plex nanosystems:A) optical measurands with multiparametric dependencies in complex nanosystems,B) measurands in complex biological and chemical nanosystems, andC) measurands in complex nanosystems based on quantum effects.Special focus common to all three areas is the analysis of metrological instrumentation for measurands of complex nanosystems. Our interdisciplinary approach including scientists mainly from physics, chemistry and electrical engineering, is a key aspect not only of the RTG but also of the newly established Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology (LENA), which is a new research building hosting the RTG in the second phase. The overall goal of the RTG is to enable a better understanding and application of general strategies to achieve traceability of novel measurands emerging in complex nanosystems. Joint mentoring by scientists from TU Braunschweig and the national metrology institute PTB, the second largest of its kind worldwide, is a unique feature of this research training group ensuring that its graduates will gain an in-depth understanding of the established and novel concepts of metrology. The qualification programme will continuously develop its innovative profile and integrate as well courses offered by the Braunschweig International Graduate School of Metrology B-IGSM and Graduate Academy GradTUBS. The start of the joint research centre Laboratory for Emerg-ing Nanometrology LENA is expected to provide an internationally unique research environment for metrology of complex nanosystems.
