Constellations: The Projection Planetarium As Immersive Knowledge Space

Subject Area Theatre and Media Studies
Term from 2013 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 234002754

The research project 'Constellations: The Projection Planetarium As Immersive Knowledge Space' is a knowledge transfer project in cooperation with Planetarium Hamburg. Its intention is to transfer the findings of the DFG-funded research project 'Time-Image-Space: The Projection Planetarium Between Media Aesthetics And Knowledge Representation' to the investigated institution and to prove to which extent the practice of popular scientific education in planetaria can be illuminated and enhanced by concepts stemming from the field of cultural sciences. In doing so the research project will not only try to transfer specific content but it will include the technical and aesthetic forms in discussing the issue of knowledge and education in the planetarium. The starting point for these considerations is the current transformation of the planetarium into an universal visual medium. This fundamental change is enabled by the advent of the new digital fulldome projection technology, which has already loosend the connection between planetaria and astronomy. The main task of the cooperation with Planetarium Hamburg in the framework of this research project is to compose and develop a 15 to 20 minutes fulldome video, in which the interplay of knowledge, technology and aesthetics is highlighted.
