The project deals with islands as distinct locations of ResourceCultures. The comparison between several islands with regard to their respective resource use illustrates the particularly emphasised importance of freshwater as a scarce resource. A historical case study will use the interpretation of Late Medieval and Early Modern island compendia (islarios) to examine the contemporary discourse on freshwater management as well as the technological, infrastructural and cultural changes in the use of water. The archaeological case study will focus on water supply and sanitation and the importance of water for monasteries on islands.
