GSC 4: Spemann Graduiertenschule für Biologie und Medizin (SGBM)
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
SGBM hatte sich zum Ziel gesetzt ein exzellentes PhD Programm zu schaffen, welches durch Internationalität, Interdisziplinarität, Intellektuelle Entwicklung and Innovation (4 Is) getrieben war. Während den 2 Förderphasen waren 40% der Doktorierenden international und stammten aus 38 verschiedenen Ländern (Internationalität). Sie schlossen in 7 verschiedenen Forschungsgebieten ab, die durch monatliche Reunions, jährliche Retreats, eigene Gastrednerseminare und ein jährliches multidisziplinäres Modul der Doktorierenden verbunden waren (Interdisziplinarität). Zusätzlich zu 90% experimenteller Laborarbeit, welche 478 Publikationen lieferte, wurden die Doktorierenden in Schlüsselqualifikationen, Methoden, Didaktik und Lehre ausgebildet. Sie betreuten Studierende und nahmen an Konferenzen und kurzen Forschungsaufenthalten weltweit teil (Intellektuelle Entwicklung). SGBM ist das Flagschiff für Doktorierendenausbildung an der Universität Freiburg geworden. Die Schule hat Standards im Bereich der strikten Auswahl und besseren Betreuung von Doktorierenden gesetzt. Sie implementierte zum erstenmal MD/PhD, Fast- Track und Industriementoren Programme und schaffte eine bessere Unterstützung der Absolventen in der PhD-Postdoc Phase und bei Familien- und Kinderbetreuung (Innovation). Von 195 ausgewählten Doktorierenden sind 12 aus verschiedenen Gründen während des Doktorates ausgeschieden. Der Rest hat mit exzellenten Auszeichnungen, mindestens einer Erst- und ca. 2 Koautorenpublikationen in hochrangigen Zeitschriften und einer Durchschnittslaufzeit von 4 Jahren abgeschlossen. Die 129 Alumni fanden qualifizierte Postdoc oder Wissenschaftleranstellungen an Universitäten, in der Industrie, in Kliniken oder im Publikationswesen weltweit. Ungefähr 25% von ihnen haben bereits Leitungsfunktionen inne (Managers, Juniorprofessoren, etc.). Der Erfolg von SGBM gemessen an Publikationsleistung, interdisziplinärer Ausbildung und exzellenter Karrierewege basiert auf 4 Säulen: (i) strikte Auswahl der Doktorierenden, (ii) kontrollierte Betreuung, (iii) breites Curriuclum mit verpflichtenden und freiwilligen Kursen und (iv) akademische und industrielle Karriereberatung. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal von SGBM sind die eigens finanzierten Track-1 PhD Stellen, welche die besten Wissenschaftler anziehen, die ihr Forschungsprojekt selber auswählen und mitgestalten können. Diese intellektuelle Herausforderung in der Doktorandenausbildung soll erhalten blieben, in dem PhD Stellen von Industriepartnern, Stiftungen, Benefizanlässen und von Land BW/Universität finanziert werden sollen. Das künftige Ziel von SGBM soll es sein, die Aufnahme von Doktorierenden aus den SFBs der Lebenswissenschaften grundsätzlich anzubieten (SFB-Track) und die SGBM PIs zu unterstützen, exzellente Doktoranden für ihre Drittmittelprojekte zu finden (Track-2). In diesem Sinne haben wir kürzlich Doktorierende aus dem Exzellenzcluster CIBSS aufgenommen (CIBSS-Track). Für die GRKs offeriert SGBM die Auswahl der Doktorierenden und die Kursorganisation zu unterstützen und die Betreuungsstandards zu überwachen. Die GRKs sollen aber eigenständige Doktorandenprogramme bleiben. Letztlich plant SGBM ihre exzellente strukturierte Doktorandenausbildung auf weitere Bereiche der Lebenswissenschaften der Universität Freiburg auszudehnen, sofern die Fakultäten und Einrichtungen dies unterstützen.
