EXC 4: Nanosystem Initiative München (NIM)
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Die Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) wurde von November 2006 bis Oktober 2019 von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) im Rahmen der deutschen Exzellenzinitiative als Exzellenzcluster gefördert. NIM brachte mehr als 60 Forschungsgruppen im Raum München zusammen und bündelte deren interdisziplinäre Expertise in Physik, Chemie, Elektrotechnik, Biologie, Pharmazie und Medizin zu einem kohärenten nanowissenschaftlichen Cluster. Viele einzelne nanoskalige Bausteine und Komponenten waren bereits in den frühen 2000er Jahren entwickelt worden, aber es war wenig über deren Integration zu funktionalen Systemen bekannt. Die übergeordnete Vision von NIM bestand nun darin, eine breite Palette multifunktionaler Nanosysteme zu schaffen, zu manipulieren, sie in komplexen realistischen Umgebungen zu betreiben und ihr Anwendungspotenzial in so unterschiedlichen Bereichen wie Informationsverarbeitung, Energieumwandlung und Lebenswissenschaften zu erschließen. Von Quanteneffekten dominierte Forschungsgebiete behandelten Einzel-Elektronen- und Spinverhalten bei extrem niedrigen Temperaturen, nanophotonische Systeme und Strategien zur Quanteninformationsverarbeitung. Weitere Forschungsgebiete befassten sich mit Nanosensoren und -Aktuatoren, mit künstlichen und natürlichen Einzel-Molekül-Maschinen, Nano-Objekten in lebenden Zellen und wirkstofftransportierenden Nanosystemen. In der zweiten Förderperiode kam der Bereich „Nanosysteme für die Energieumwandlung“ hinzu. Die hohe Interdisziplinarität von NIM garantierte Synergie-Effekte, ein international wettbewerbsfähiges Forschungsprogramm, ein einmalig fruchtbares Umfeld für die Doktorandenausbildung und ideale Voraussetzungen für technologische Innovationen. Eines der strukturellen Hauptziele von NIM war die Schaffung eines weltweit führenden Forschungsstandorts für Nanowissenschaften in Deutschland, mit den begabtesten jungen Wissenschaftlern des Fachgebiets. Besonderes Augenmerk wurde auf die frühzeitige Unabhängigkeit der Nachwuchswissenschaftler gelegt, indem ihnen wettbewerbsfähige Start-up-Pakete, flexible Projektfinanzierung und Tenure-Track-Professuren angeboten wurden, um eine langfristige Karriereperspektive zu ermöglichen. NIM-Wissenschaftler haben mehr als 2500 Artikel in den renommiertesten wissenschaftlichen Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht. Darüber hinaus brachte NIM zahlreiche Patente, Auszeichnungen, Preise und Stipendien des European Research Council (ERC) sowie weltweit erfolgreiche Spin-off-Unternehmen hervor. NIM erlangte weltweite Bekanntheit, indem es aktive Partnerschaften mit führenden Nanozentren wie dem California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) initiierte, ein Graduiertenprogramm durchführte, effektive Öffentlichkeitsarbeit durchführte und eine Reihe internationaler Konferenzen organisierte. NIM hat den Grundstein für eine Reihe neuer Initiativen gelegt. Wir gehen davon aus, dass der Raum München auch weiterhin ein führendes Zentrum der Nanoforschung mit weltweiter Sichtbarkeit sein wird.
