With the synthesis of bis[N,N´-diisopropylbenzamidinato(-)]silicon(II) [PhC(NiPr)2SiN(iPr)C(Ph)=NiPr], the prototype of a new class of silicon(II) compounds with one bidentate and one monodentate amidinato ligand has been made available in preliminary studies. With the additional imino functionality of the monodentate ligand, this donor-stabilized silylene can formally react as a tetracoordinate silicon(II) compound and thereby offers quite new perspectives for both silicon(II) and silicon(IV) chemistry [e.g. transformations of the type lambda3Si(II) -> lambda5Si(IV) and lambda3Si(II) -> lambda6Si(IV)]. In this project further silicon(II) compounds of this type will be synthesized and the reactivity profile of this new class of compounds will be studied systematically. Analogous donor-stabilized silylenes with guanidinato ligands will be included in these studies.
