Final Report Abstract

Optics & Photonics (O&P) are key enabling technologies for many high-end applications and furthermore drive research in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. O&P is constantly growing and plays an important role for solving challenges of our modern and globalized society such as energy efficiency, information and communication, health care, autonomous driving, and others. The mission of the Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP) is to provide a multidisciplinary environment for first-class research and education as well as for the generation of knowledge and innovation in O&P. KSOP research activities cover a wide range of topics which are organized in Research Areas (RAs). Starting with four RAs in 2006, we have adapted them several times to adjust for major trends and to strategically foster particularly dynamic fields of research. KSOP is currently organized in five RAs entitled ‘Photonic Materials & Devices’, ‘Quantum Optics & Spectroscopy’, ‘Biomedical Photonics’, ‘Optical Systems’, and ‘Solar Energy’. Offering both, an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. program, KSOP presently encompasses Principal Investigators from four different KIT Departments, i.e., Physics, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, as well as Chemistry and Biosciences. KSOP has also formally established collaborations to two non-university institutions, i.e., the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Wuerttemberg (ZSW) and the Research Center for Information Technology (FZI). Currently, 24 professors, 10 further staff scientists and mentors, some 80 doctoral researchers, more than 200 Ph.D. alumni as well as 170 current M.Sc. students and more than 380 M.Sc. alumni position KSOP as an internationally very visible research and education institution. KSOP is moreover interlinked with the European Erasmus Mundus program EuroPhotonics and the recently founded Max Planck School of Photonics. KSOP members are also benefitting from the long standing and fruitful interaction with the German O&P industry. The KSOP educational concept is designed to qualify the graduates for accelerated careers at world leading academic institutions and in high-technology industries. We actively promote the thesis work of our doctoral researchers by dedicated supervision, mentoring, networking as well as scientific and technical trainings. Concomitantly, we augment their professional skills by a tailored personal- and management trainings. The optional MBA-fundamentals degree program of KSOP, which we started in 2013, has proven to be a particularly successful approach towards acquiring professional skills during the Ph.D. phase.
