Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Optik & Photonik (O&P) sind Schlüsseltechnologien für zahlreiche industrielle Anwendungsfelder und stimulieren zudem immer wieder die Grundlagenforschung in Physik, Chemie, den Lebens- sowie den Ingenieurwissenschaften. Die O&P-Industrie wächst ständig und spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Bewältigung vieler Herausforderungen unserer Gesellschaft. Fortschritte bei z.B. der Energiewende, der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik, den Lebenswissenschaften und dem autonomen Fahren werden maßgeblich ermöglicht durch optische Technologien. Die Mission der Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP) ist die Schaffung eines effizienten und multidisziplinären Umfelds für eine exzellente Ausbildung und Forschung sowie für wegweisende Innovationen in O&P. Ausgehend von vier Forschungsbereichen im Jahr 2006 haben wir diese mehrfach angepasst, um den übergeordneten technologischen Trends gerecht zu werden und um besonders dynamische Forschungsfelder strategisch zu fördern. Die Forschungsaktivitäten der KSOP haben ihre Schwerpunkte nunmehr in den folgenden fünf interdisziplinären Forschungsbereichen: „Photonische Materialien und Bauelemente“, „Quantenoptik und Spektroskopie“, „Biomedizinische Photonik“, „Optische Systeme und Solarenergie“. Die KSOP umfasst sowohl ein Master- als auch ein strukturiertes Promotionsprogramm und wird derzeit von vier KIT-Fakultäten getragen (Physik, Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik, Maschinenbau, Chemie und Biowissenschaften). Die KSOP kooperiert zudem auch mit zwei außeruniversitären Institutionen, dem Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoffforschung Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) und dem Forschungszentrum Informatik (FZI). 24 Professoren, 10 weitere Wissenschaftler, rund 80 aktive und über 200 ehemalige Promovierende sowie rund 170 aktive Studierende und mehr als 380 Alumni im M.Sc. Programm haben die KSOP als international sehr sichtbare Forschungs- und Bildungsinstitution etabliert. Durch die Vernetzung der KSOP mit dem europäischen Erasmus Mundus Programm EuroPhotonics und die jüngst angelaufene nationale Max Planck School of Photonics besteht eine sehr gute internationale und nationale Vernetzung. Weiterhin profitieren die Mitglieder der KSOP von der langjährigen und erfolgreichen Interaktion mit der deutschen O&P Industrie. Das Konzept der KSOP zielt auf die Qualifizierung der AbsolventInnen für erfolgreiche Karrieren in weltweit führenden Forschungsinstituten oder Unternehmen. Wir fördern unsere DoktorandInnen mittels dedizierter Betreuung durch ProfessorInnen und MentorInnen, durch vielfältige Vernetzungsmöglichkeiten sowie durch technische und wissenschaftliche Trainingsmodule. Parallel verbessern wir die Karrierechancen der Absolventen durch maßgeschneiderte Schlüsselqualifikations- und Management-Module. Als ein besonders erfolgreicher Ansatz für den Erwerb beruflich relevanter Kompetenzen in der Promotionsphase hat sich das optionale MBA-Fundamentals Programm der KSOP erwiesen, welches seit 2013 angeboten wird.
