Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Seit ihrer Gründung 2007 ist es erklärtes Ziel der Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) an der Universität Mannheim, angehende Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und Nachwuchswissenschaftler nach besten internationalen Standards und mit einem besonderen Fokus auf Exzellenz in der Forschung auszubilden. Dafür bietet sie eine strukturierte Doktorandenausbildung in empirischen Methoden und deren Anwendung auf die Betriebswirtschaftslehre, Volkswirtschaftslehre und Sozialwissenschaften an. Die GESS gliedert sich in drei Zentren: Das Center for Doctoral Studies in Business (CDSB), das Center for Doctoral Studies in Economics (CDSE) und das Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences (CDSS). Sie integriert die Disziplinen Betriebswirtschaftslehre, Volkswirtschaftslehre und die Sozialwissenschaften in ein kohärentes Unterrichtsprogramm und betont diejenigen zentralen methodologischen und quantitativ-empirischen Grundlagen, die disziplinübergreifend nutzbar sind. Dadurch bildet sie eine kohärente Struktur, ohne Kompromisse bei der Qualität der spezialisierten Forschung eingehen zu müssen. 2019, zwölf Jahre nach ihrer Gründung, bietet die GESS auch weiterhin eine Doktorandenausbildung von höchster Qualität in den beteiligten akademischen Disziplinen an. Die GESS ist einzigartig in Deutschland und eine der wenigen Graduiertenschulen weltweit, die den Austausch von Ideen, Methoden und Forschungsansätzen über die Fachgrenzen der wirtschafts- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Einzeldisziplinen hinweg fördert; sie bietet ihren Doktoranden damit eine weitergehende wissenschaftliche Perspektive in einer kritischen Phase ihrer Sozialisation als Forscher. Die GESS hat über den Förderzeitraum ein international wettbewerbsfähiges strukturiertes Doktorandenprogramm etabliert und damit zur bestehenden hohen akademischen Reputation der Universität Mannheim beigetragen. GESS Alumni sind bestens auf die Anforderungen des akademischen sowie nicht-akademischen Arbeitsmarktes vorbereitet und besetzen Professuren sowie Juniorprofessuren an international führenden Universitäten und Positionen bei renommierten internationalen Organisationen und in der Privatwirtschaft in Deutschland und darüber hinaus. Die momentane Phase nach dem Auslaufen der DFG-Förderung markiert den Übergang von der Projektfinanzierung im Rahmen der Exzellenzinitiative hin zu einer nachhaltigen Finanzierung ab Herbst 2019, die es der Graduiertenschule erlaubt, ihr Ausbildungsprogramm fortzuführen und weiterhin mindestens die gleiche Anzahl an Promovierenden zuzulassen und zu betreuen wie in den Förderphasen. Die finanzielle Zukunft der Graduiertenschule ist nicht zuletzt dank langfristiger Zusagen der Universität Mannheim, externer Institutionen und der einzelnen Abteilungen gesichert. Darüber hinaus wird die GESS weitere finanzielle Mittel einwerben, um ihr Programm auszubauen und ihre Rolle als eine europäisch führende Graduiertenschule in den Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften weiter zu festigen.
