EXC 62: REBIRTH - Von Regenerativer Biologie zu Rekonstruktiver Therapie
Grundlagen der Biologie und Medizin
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Basierend auf unsere langjährige Expertise bei der klinischen Translation von Grundlagenforschung, insbesondere in der Transplantationsmedizin und der Regenerativen Medizin, erforschte der DFG-geförderte Exzellenzcluster REBIRTH grundlagenbiologische Prinzipien und entwickelte innovative regenerative Therapien. Die Umsetzung unserer Konzepte erfolgte dabei in enger Zusammenarbeit der beteiligten hannoverschen Universitäten (MHH, LUH, TiHo) und außeruniversitären Institute, unter Beteiligung führender Forschungsorganisationen (Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Helmholtz Gemeinschaft , Max Planck Gesellschaft). Kennzeichnend für den Exzellenzcluster war der Fokus auf die Organe Herz, Lunge, Leber und Blut sowie die enge Zusammenarbeit von Klinikern, Naturwissenschaftlern und Ingenieuren. Für die Entwicklung innovativer Therapiekonzepte, basierend auf endogenen Regenerationsmechanismen, Zelltherapien, Tissue Engineering und neuartigen Biohybrid-Medizinprodukten, nutzten wir sowohl unsere entwicklungs- und stammzellbiologische Grundlagenforschung als auch unsere ausgewiesene Expertise zur Herstellung, Modifikation, Differenzierung und Expansion von (induzierten pluripotenten) Stammzellen. Daneben führte die Ausweitung unserer Aktivitäten auf weitere Forschungsfelder und Organsysteme zu neuen innovativen Ansätzen, z. B. im Bereich der Prävention und der Infektionsbekämpfung. Neben einer Vielzahl hochrangiger Publikationen belegen zahlreiche Patentanmeldungen, Spin-Offs und klinische Studien z. B. zur Therapie der postpartalen Kardiomyopathie, zur Zelltherapie von Myokardinfarkten oder genetisch bedingten Immundefizienzen und zur Implantation mitwachsender Herzklappen unsere erfolgreiche Arbeit. Unter weitgehender Beibehaltung der originären Struktur von 2006 nutzte REBIRTH in der zweiten Förderperiode ab 2012 für die Entwicklung regenerativer Therapien zusätzliche Plattformen zu Zellprozessierung, Biomaterialentwicklung, Imaging und Gewährleistung biomedizinischer Sicherheitsaspekte. Von grundlegender Bedeutung für eine sichere Umsetzung und zügige Verwertung neuer Therapie- und Studienkonzepte war dabei unsere aktive Beteiligung an der Definition von Sicherheits- und Wirksamkeitsrichtlinien unter Beachtung ethischer, klinischer und rechtlicher Maßstäbe. Auf Ebene des Managements haben die zum Teil zwischenzeitlich implementierten Führungsinstrumente die Steuerung des Exzellenzclusters signifikant erleichtert, zusätzliche Gleichstellungsprogramme haben die Mitarbeiterentwicklung über das etablierte PhD-Programm hinaus gefördert. Auf dieser Basis, bestärkt durch die nachhaltige Unterstützung des Landes Niedersachsen und der beteiligten Institutionen, haben wir REBIRTH zu einem langfristig tragfähigen, international sichtbaren Zentrum für innovative Regenerative Medizin etabliert. Das Konsortium REBIRTH wird als Forschungszentrum für Translationale Regenerative Medizin mit modifizierter Struktur weiterhin an der MHH, unter Einbeziehung der beteiligten Partnereinrichtungen, Bestand haben.
