Nucleosome spacing in a folded chromatin environment (A07)

Subject Area General Genetics and Functional Genome Biology
Term from 2013 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 213249687

Nucleosome remodeling factors are responsible for structural and functional dynamics of chromatin. One of the signature activities of ISWI remodelers is their ability to equilibrate the spacing between neighboring nucleosomes. Equal spacing between nucleosomes in turn is thought to drive compaction of chromatin. How ISWI remodelers space nucleosomes and how they can access and remodel tightly compacted chromatin in the first place remains puzzling. With innovative tools and complementary in vitro and in vivo assays, we will shed light on the mechanism of spacing and remodeling of tightly folded chromatin structures.
