GSC 81: International Graduate School of Science and Engineering (IGSSE)
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2006 widmet sich die International Graduate School of Science and Engineering (IGSSE) der innovativen interdisziplinären und internationalen Projektfinanzierung, die eng mit einer exzellenten Doktorandenausbildung verbunden ist. Ihre Stärken in der Förderung von Wissenschaft und Nachwuchs sowie ihre internationale Ausrichtung veranlassten die Technische Universität München (TUM) im Jahr 2016, die IGSSE als ständige Einrichtung zu etablieren, mit dem Ziel der Universität als Instrument zur Initiierung und Umsetzung strategischer Entscheidungen zu dienen. In den letzten 13 Jahren hat sich die IGSSE in vielen Bereichen als Vorbild profilieren können. Die Zusammensetzung der Doktoranden aus nahezu allen Fakultäten der TUM führte zur Entwicklung international anerkannter Qualitätssicherungsstandards für die Promotion an der TUM und 2009 zur Gründung der fakultätsübergreifenden TUM Graduate School (TUM-GS). Heute ist die IGSSE eines von 8 interdisziplinär ausgerichteten Graduiertenzentren der TUM-GS. Ihre rund 190 Mitglieder promovieren an fast allen 15 Fakultäten der TUM. Die IGSSE fördert neue Forschungsfelder an der Schnittstelle von Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften. Diese Idee wurde in beiden DFG Förderperioden über kleine, flexible Projektteams umgesetzt, die entweder fakultätsübergreifend oder international zusammengesetzt sind – weshalb die IGSSE auch eher als multi-thematische, denn als thematische Graduiertenschule zu verstehen ist. Die IGSSE lädt jährlich zu neuen Projektvorschlägen ein, die von jeweils mindestens zwei hochrangigen Wissenschaftlern aus unterschiedlichen Fakultäten der TUM oder gemeinsam mit einem internationalen Partner bei der IGSSE eingereicht werden müssen. Forscher aller Karrierestufen bilden ein Projektteam mit bis zu 10 Mitgliedern. Bis 2019 haben 151 Projektteams ihre Forschungen aufgenommen, 67 von ihnen wurden in Zusammenarbeit mit internationalen Partnern durchgeführt. Über diese Teams erhalten die Promovierenden eine einzigartige, fachübergreifende Ausbildung. Diese wird durch das IGSSE-Qualifizierungsprogramm ergänzt, das inbesondere für die interdisziplinäre Teamarbeit Trainings anbietet, die sich speziell mit der Kommunikation über wissenschaftliche Disziplinen, nationale Grenzen hinweg sowiein die Gesellschaft hinein hinweg befassen. Auch junge TUM Postdocs profitieren vom IGSSE-Konzept, da sie in der Position als Projektteamleitende (PTL) die Arbeit der einzelnen Teams koordinieren und damit erste Erfahrungen in der Verantwortung für eine kleine Forschungsgruppe sammeln. Diese Position hat sich für viele von ihnen in Bezug auf eigene Forschungsprojekte und weitere Karriereschritte als sehr hilfreich erwiesen. Seit 2007 hat die IGSSE neben rund 450 Promovierenden auch 180 Postdocs unterstützen können. Durch ihr flexibles und vielfältig einsetzbares Konzept wird die IGSSE auch in Zukunft der TUM als Institution für innovative Forschungsprojekte und wegweisendes Promotionstraining dienen.
