Two of the fundamental open problems in theoretical physics are finding an appropriate non-perturbative definition of quantum gravity on the conceptual side and understanding the strongly-coupled regime of quantum field theories like QCD on the methodological side. The holographic AdS/CFT dualities give a handle on these issues by providing an equivalent description of (d+1)-dimensional gravity theories on anti-de Sitter space in terms of d-dimensional conformal field theories. They have led to remarkable progress in our understanding of both, gravity and strongly-coupled quantum field theory, and have become an integral part of theoretical high-energy physics research. The aim of this project is to establish a new class of holographic relations. We want to explicitly realize sequences of holographic dualities, where the theory on the lower-dimensional side of one duality can be identified with the higher-dimensional part of the following. These multi-layered dualities allow for the equivalent description of a single theory in a variety of spacetime dimensions and shall provide a new method for the study of gravity and strongly-coupled quantum field theory.
