Controlling the performance of metal bonded diamond grinding wheels by adapting the grinding wheel characteristics

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term from 2014 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 246433914

The properties of metallic bonded grinding wheels depend on the properties of the grinding grains as well as the components of the binding system and the process parameters during the manufacturing process (sintering process) of the grinding tool. All these properties together determine the performance of the tool. The knowledge of the correlations between the manufacturing of the grinding wheel, the adjusted properties by the manufacturing and the resulting performance is currently not available for scientists. Usually research institutes are provided with grinding tools with the required properties (e.g. hardness) by the manufacturing company. However, due to this procedure it is not possible to correlate the process performance with the manufacturing process of the tools. For this reason, there is currently only limited understanding on the whole process chain for grinding with bonded grinding wheels. Furthermore, the adjustment of the properties, e.g. hardness of the bonding, is done by applying additives. This makes it difficult to identify higher-level relations and general conclusions on the grinding process and the dressing process as well. For cutting processes research on the influence of the tool manufacturing on the tool performance is carried out since many years. This made it possible to adjust the tool properties on the process. The aim of this research project is to close the described knowledge gap for grinding tools. The focus is on the determination, how the sintering process determines the tool properties and which of the tool properties are relevant for the process performance.
