Nanostructured ternary compounds prepared by focused particle-beam induced deposition

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Synthesis and Properties of Functional Materials
Term from 2013 to 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 246488785

The aim of this proposal is to fabricate nanostructured ternary compounds with interesting spintronic and thermoelectric properties by means of focused electron- and focused ion-beam induced deposition (FEBID and FIBID) and to investigate their structural, electrical, thermoelectrical and magneto-transport properties. The fabrication method is a focused electron/ion beam assisted chemical-vapor-deposition where several precursor gases are simultaneously used to form multi-component functional nanostructures. Owing to their potentially wide field of applications, the proposal focuses on the investigation and functionalization of Heusler nanostructured compounds. In particular, the role played by size effects (discrete energy level spacing, Coulomb blockade) and inter-grain tunnel coupling on the transport properties of potentially technologically relevant compounds, such as nano-granular Co2FeSi and Co2MnSi, for spintronics and TiNiSn, for thermoelectric applications, will be analyzed.
