The rise of the metropolis (from 1770 to 1900) transformed the appearance of the street. In a very confined space, social and political changes that are experienced and portrayed as “unsafe” and insecure by those involved become apparent. The sub-project examines the architectural and media representation and visual transformation of streets from an actor-centred perspective, as an instrument of urban planning and as a framework for social performance. Security issues here become a medium of common sense and of political dissent.
