Project Details
Pelagic transfer of iron and nutrients in the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone (B10)
Subject Area
Oceanography
Term
from 2014 to 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 27542298
Fe, P and N are key for ocean productivity and N2 fixation. The supply of Fe and P to surface waters and off shore from sediment sources is enhanced in oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), while N supply is reduced. Fe stabilisation mechanisms and removal fluxes in OMZs are not well known and quantified. Total dissolved N and P fluxes are poorly quantified, because the magnitude of the organic N and P fractions, which form important nutrients to offshore microbial communities, are not well known. This project will provide a quantitative and mechanistic assessment of N, P and Fe transfer in the Peru region, facilitating model parameterisation for projections and feedback studies under future climate conditions.
