Charge transport and switching in metal¿molecule¿metal junctions will be investigated between a scanning tunnelling microscope tip and a metal substrate in electrolyte containing sample molecules. Our target molecules represent custom-designed molecular rods composed of redox-active perylene bisimide (PBI) electrophores bearing tailored spacer units and anchor groups. By tuning the Fermi levels of the (nano-)electrodes relative to energy levels of the redox molecules we aim to study and to control the electron transport through single molecules and explore concepts of redox-gated molecular nanostructures in an electro-chemical environment. The project will provide unique new insight into electron transport processes in single molecules which are triggered by electrical stimuli with potential applications towards molecular redox switches at electrified solid¿liquid interfaces.
