The apparatus applied for “Optischer Messplatz für Yb Ionen” will allow to cool trapped Yb ions and to detect them in the trap. Cold crystals of Yb ions are then interacting with degenerate Rb atoms. This will allow us to access a new, hybrid, quantum many-body system and study it in great detail. The central objective will be to understand collisions of ultracold Rb atoms with single or small crystals of Yb ions trapped in a combined micro-fabricated atom-ion trap.
