Adelbert of Heidenheim and Ilsung. Edition, translation, commentary and réécriture visualisation of the sources from Heidenheim concerning the reform of the monastery in the mid 12th century

Subject Area Medieval History
Term from 2014 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 253282312

In the middle of the 12th century Adelbert of Heidenheim and a certain Ilsung each wrote a report on how in the cloister Heidenheim secular clerics had been replaced by monks: This reform led to considerable tensions and caused even to pope to intervene. Ilsung's (rather short) text allows us to see the situation as it were in the middle of the conflict. Adelbert gives a retrospective yet detailed account. Both texts are until now only available through an outdated and insufficient edition from the 17th century. The texts have thus - regarding the importance of the historical process they report and their inherent potential for further research - gained relatively little attention by recent scholarship. The project aims to remedy that by creating a scholarly digital edition.Adelbert and Ilsung integrated reports on the foundation of the monastery Heidenheim in their texts using older works which they reworked, permuted and enhanced. The project aims to analyse and visualize this process of "réécriture". A graphical overview will show which texts were used by Adelbert and Ilsung and how they were used. The user of the edition will be able to view the original texts and Adelbert's or Ilsung's redaction at once and thus and compare them. Both texts will be published together with a translation and a detailed commentary. The tradition of the texts will be presented via photographs.
