Top-down or bottom-up? Explaining Ethnic Voting in Latin America

Subject Area Political Science
Term from 2014 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 253920477

This research project investigates variance in ethnic voting across Latin American countries since the 1990s. It is the first project that aims to explain variance in ethnic voting on behalf of a systematic time-series cross-sectional analysis. The goal of the project is to develop theories of ethnic voting and test them across time, countries and ethnic groups. In particular, the project will contrast elite-based and societal theories of ethnic voting. In doing so, it will provide important new insight into the dynamics of ethnic mobilization in Latin America and elsewhere. This research is crucial for understanding contemporary electoral competition and representation as well as ethnic mobilization in Latin America. It addresses a large scientific and public community.
