This project aims to digitize and to index the Leipzig Literary Journal (Leipziger Literaturzeitung, hereafter: LLZ) to the level of each single essay (single review) and to supply it online, adding to the previously digitized and indexed historical review journals of the Saxon-Thuringian region with a national impact (Weimar, Jena, Halle: Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung, Jenaische Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung, hereafter: ALZ, JALZ). The ALZ, JALZ and LLZ rank among the most important review journals which were universally oriented in terms of content and which critically introduced most of the new publications from Germany and abroad to their readership. This previously underappreciated journal holds great potential for research on various issues of intellectual and cultural history of the 19th century due to its prominent publishers and its renowned authors, as well as its rich content. The applicants would like to help fulfill this desideratum by presenting the digitized pages, metadata and plain text of the LLZ together with the comparable contemporary examples of ALZ and JALZ. The online presentation will be integrated into the journals¿ portal of the ThULB Jena (Journals @ UrMEL). This digital edition will also be embedded in the established national structures (Electronic Journals Library EZB, union catalog of the Common Library Network GVK) and will additionally be provided with interfaces to national and international digitization portals. Optical character recognition (OCR) will introduce a new feature in comparison to the completed projects, which will allow for the creation of an editable and searchable full text version.
