G2-steady re-grinding and interpolation method for NCs using piecewise defined clothoids (cornu spline 2)

Subject Area Production Systems, Operations Management, Quality Management and Factory Planning
Term from 2014 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 258198676

In the course of the first funding period, new regrinding methods for numerical controls by means of clothoids for the straight-straight, straight-circle and circle-circle transitions in the two-dimensional space have been successfully investigated and developed. Due to the linear and controllable curvature outline, the clothoid regrinding enables a limitation of the jerk and the transverse acceleration. In most cases, this results in a high and smooth velocity. This, in turn, can lead to an improved productivity and surface quality. With the smooth dynamic profile the clothoid regrinding also helps to protect and conserve drives and mechanics. In this funding period the focus will be on the analysis and development of clothoid splines as a two-dimensional interpolation method for numerical controls. According to the available interpolation types in the state of the art, interpolating as well as approximating methods based on clothoids will be implemented. As in the first funding period in this project a version of the developed algorithms will be executed in a real-time environment and ported to an NC kernel. This is to demonstrate the advantages of clothoids for the interpolation over current methods.
