Biocompatibility and tissue integration of an innovative laser-nanostructured titanium surface - transfer of an air-and space technology

The focus of our research project is to examine an innovative air and space technology of a laser-nanostructured surface morphology, which will be transferred to arthroplasty.In cell culture and in animal experiments the biocompatibility and the ingrowth of this new surface will be tested and compared to conventional surface treatments of arthroplasty. In the cell culture the interaction of osteoblasts with various conventional and laser-nanostructured titanium surfaces (plasma spray, and titanium-niobium-nitrite) will be analyzed using various biomarkers for biomineralization.In the rabbit experiment titanium implants (each coated with a titanium plasma spray, or with titanium-niobium-nitrite and treated with laser or untreated) will be introduced into the distal femur. The initial stability is examined in push out tests using fresh rabbit femora. Further push out tests will be performed after 28 and 56 days to show the quality of osteointegration. Bone apposition to the implant will be examined histologically and by electron microscopy and X-ray scans.
