System studies for an optical gradiometer mission (B07)

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics, Cartography
Term from 2014 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 239994235

Our objective is to explore the potential of future space gravity gradiometry missions in the light of the newest developments in inertial sensor technology, with a special emphasis on laser interferometry metrology. First, we will investigate what are the requirements on the main parameters (noise level, calibration accuracy, dynamic range, etc.) of the different sensors involved in the measurement process, but also when considering the full gradiometry mission (orbit, drag-free control). Second, and based on assumptions made in a feasibility study, we will analyse and quantify the science benefits of such a space gradiometry mission, in particular for the recovery of the Earth's time-variable gravity field.
