Project Details
Characterization of the Interactions between Cutting Tools and Rock during Tunneling from a Metallurgical and Rock Physical Point of View (C05)
Subject Area
Metallurgical, Thermal and Thermomechanical Treatment of Materials
Term
from 2014 to 2022
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 77309832
Subproject C5 aims at a fundamental understanding of the tool-ground interactions during tunneling in rock, cohesive soil and mixed-ground condition. Ground excavation in those materials, as char-acterized by crack initiation and crack propagation, as well as the tribological response of the tun-neling tools (surface spalling, fatigue, abrasion) will be investigated by experimental techniques with a high resolution. This results in determining the crack propagation in rock by acoustic measur-ing methods and characterizing the material’s microstructure by electron microscopy. Technical guidelines and optimized tool concepts will be derived from the experimental and analytical find-ings.
