Core level photoelectron spectroscopy of mass-selected clusters

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2014 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 262900853

A new experimental method for core level photoelectron spectroscopy of mass-selected cluster ions in the gas phase will be developed. Cluster ions are separated in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. An ion packet of defined mass is illuminated with a laser pulse with a photon energy in the range of 50-100eV. The kinetic energy of the photoelectrons is measured by a time-of-flight electron spectrometer. The method allows the recording of photoelectron spectra of low-lying core levels. In a first application nanoparticles and clusters of the metals lead, titanium, aluminum and the semiconductor material germanium will be studied. The studies focus on the size-dependent deviations of the chemical properties from the behavior of the bulk surfaces.
