Understanding the third body formation during sliding friction utilizing multilayer model alloys

Subject Area Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term from 2015 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 263659068

The main objective of the proposed work is to utilize metallic multilayer systems as model alloys for studying the effect of differently prepared initial microstructures on friction and wear of a tribosystem. This will be done by changing the superlattice period of metallic multilayer samples. It is therefore planned to perform microfriction experiments on these samples within the chamber of an ultrahigh vacuum chamber. With additional experiments the effect of severe plastic deformation prior to friction experiments, the effect of co-deformation and the effect of topography will be studied.
