Memberschip of a German institution to the CLOCKSS Network

Term from 2014 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 264172095

Scholarly information today is mainly born digital and is increasingly made available through digitalmeans. This makes effective long term digital preservation urgent for researchers in every field.Scholars know this is important, but generally assume that others, especially libraries, will addressthe problem. No simple solution exists. Multiple backups are a help, but do not address problems ofintegrity or authenticity or usability and older backups on tape are particularly vulnerable to physicalor magnetic decay. Serious research on this topic has gone on for a decade with valuable tools suchas LOCKSS and KOPAL as a result, but far more research remains to do. The problem of long termdigital archiving is not solved, but becomes more solvable as the research moves forward. Germanyfaces these days the task of building its own long time preservation and national hostinginfrastructure. Especially because of this it is important to have international contacts to getinternational experiences not only with technical solutions but also with the creation of businessmodels. This project supports the continuing membership of at least one German institution at theCLOCKSS Network ¿ a dark archive with content from a large number of publishers. This supportsanalysis that will take place in the context of the National Hosting project, of which Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is a member. This project is directly relevant because it is examining potentialsolutions using LOCKSS (CLOCKSS) and/or Portico.
