Influence of the honed cutting edge on process forces in relation to the variable cross-section of undeformed chip

Applicant Dr.-Ing. Thilo Grove, since 7/2016
Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering

Reliable knowledge on the load profile of the cutting edge is essential for an efficient cutting tool development. The modeling of process forces for different cutting operations and materials is therefore in the main focus of many research works. Since there are different approaches to describe the process forces during cutting, the need of a generalized constitution is a central requirement. In this research work a generalized force model will be developed for turning operations. This is based on two new approaches for force modeling regarding the cross-section of undeformed chip as well as on the cutting edge microgeometry. This model will be generalized by including known effects of cutting conditions. Further unknown effects of relevant material properties will be examined systematically. The result of this work will be a generalized force model based on relevant material properties as well as on the cutting tool macro- and microgeometry.
