Radio Observations of the Cosmic Evolution of Black Hole and Stellar Mass Growth in Galaxies

The pan-chromatic Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) provides the ideal basis to perform a comprehensive study of black hole and stellar mass growth in galaxies, reaching well beyond the peak epoch of active galactic nuclei (AGN) growth and star formation activity, and with particular attention to the influence of environment and the cosmic large scale structure. We have been leading the radio and (sub)mm observational efforts for COSMOS for a decade and we now intend to use of recently awarded large observational programs for COSMOS to address some outstanding issues of galaxy evolution: What is the relative importance of stellar mass, environment, and morphology for stellar mass growth in galaxies as a function of cosmic time? What are the typical host galaxy properties and mass growth rates of AGN, and how do they change over time? What is the role of radio-identified AGN in the regulation of stellar mass growth in galaxies? Our study will be based on new 10 cm observations of the full 2 square degree COSMOS field, facilitated through our large (384 hrs.) JVLA program. These unprecedented deep and wide imaging data will required careful quality assurance and the development of novel imaging and analysis techniques. Funding is requested for the technical and scientific exploitation of this novel data, in close collaboration with the group of Prof. Vernesa Smolcic at the University of Zagreb, for one experienced post-doc to focus on AGN-related topics and the (sub)mm survey data, and for one PhD student for the star formation aspects and JVLA radio data analysis.
