We will investigate the roles of joint attention and video media for infant learning. The research will test the ways in which video presentations may aid infants in learning about new objects. 12-month-old infants will be presented with live social information from an adult experimenter in Study 1, video presentations of an interactive adult in Study 2, and video presentations of an interactive puppet in Study 3. We will address the following questions: 1. Is learning facilitated by live or televised interaction? 2. Do characteristics of the interactant (i.e. adult or puppet) influence learning (i.e. object familiarity)? 3. Do the types of social cues provided during the interaction influence learning? In answering these questions, the project will add new information to our understanding of the cognitive and social processes developed during the first year of life. In addition, this research will inform the methodological techniques used for infant studies and education in a number of arenas, such as: 1. Developmental Cognition and Learning 2. Childhood Education 3. Television Programming 4. Early Childhood Cognitive Disorders
