Development and optimization of the hard gear skiving in the productive dual-flank-cutting for gearings

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term from 2015 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 269000193

Gear Skiving as productive and flexible cutting process has recently experienced a significant development towards a lasting industrial establishment. In hard machining, the process is currently rarely used anymore. A large establishment in the market was not achieved due to the less productive approach of single-flank-cutting and high tooling costs. An evolution of the hard gear skiving or basic scientific research of hard gear skiving process is still missing entirely. The aim of this project is to develop the productive two-flank-cutting with final optimization. The investigations will be based on the experience of soft machining regarding tool and process design and mechanical engineering. Computer-aided process design and experimental studies are used to optimize the process in terms of process parameters and in particular the hardening allowance. As a result, knowledge of suitable combinations of cutting material and coating material, optimized process parameters and the optimal process design will be available. The experimental studies will demonstrate the performance of the process in comparison to the established processes of hard finishing of gears and will allow statements of performance time and costs.
