Looking back onto three decades of observable influence of Islamic organizations on Islamic shaped regions of South-East Asia, the project asks: what causes and dynamics underlie and drive the process. There is reason to assume that Islamic actors consciously employ discourses of weakness in order to get access to resources, which are used for the de-legitimation of some established elites, and the concentration of power in the hands of actors related to the Islamist field. This in turn has far-reaching consequences for the pluralist constitution of the whole region. Field research in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines will concretely address the issues of resource regimes and how islamist groups within these regimes try to push through their goals.
