Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

This purpose of this DFG grant was to provide technical and scientific support for the LEGA-C survey, a large observation program - an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey - at the Very Large Telescope. The purpose of the survey was to collect high-quality spectra of thousands of galaxies at large cosmological look-back time (z ~ 0.6-1). The primary objects, specific to the work carried out as funded by this grant, were to a) develop and run the data reduction pipeline, b) extract kinematic information from the spectra, and c) support the publication of 2 scientific articles. The combined effort of 3 consecutively appointed postdocs funded by the grant more than delivered on this promise, despite these personnel changes. As described above our achievements are not easily separably attributed to this DFG grant, an ERC Consoloditor Grant to scientifically leverage the LEGA-C survey, and external collaborators, but I have strived (and managed) to focus the work of the DFG-funded personnel on data processing and data product delivery. In particular, the two public data releases (through ESO) and the data release papernwere accomplished entirely by DFG-funded personnel. The scientific results (a total of 11 LEGA-C collaboration papers have been published by the end of 2019) cannot attributed entirely to the DFG grant but certainly would not have been possible without it. The DFG grant has enabled a broad range of scientific results, from the first description of star-formation istories of individual galaxies at large cosmological lookback times, to the role of merging in the dynamical evolution of massive ellipticals.
