GRK 424: Codification of Violence in Medial Transformation
Subject Area
Art History, Music, Theatre and Media Studies
Term
from 1998 to 2007
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 272311
Research on the codification of violence stands at the project's center, codification understood as the transmission of violence in the sign systems of symbolic representation. In contrast to social-scientific approaches, no empirical research into specific cases of potential violence is intended; rather, the emphasis is on analyzing the media, discursive structures, and aesthetic strategies facilitating a codification of violence in both European and non-European cultures from the Middle Ages to the present. What role does violence play in various cultural sign systems, in the gender difference, when perceiving the cultural other, as an aesthetic strategy? Literature and other arts and media here form a field of investigation into the historical semantics of the concept of violence.
