GRK 532:  Physical Methods for the Structural Investigation of New Materials

Subject Area Analytical Chemistry
Term from 1999 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 272785

In the international research training group, syntheses and characterisation methods of new materials from chemistry/materials sciences, pharmacy/biology and geology are developed in interdisciplinary approaches within doctoral theses and research projects of junior scientists. Developments of new materials are coupled to analytical methods (MS, ir, nmr, UV/Vis spectroscopy, RSCA) in a reciprocal sense: not only the characterisation of the product is predominant but also the improvement of the analytical method. Intensive cooperation enables the students to tackle their problems and take up interdisciplinary discussions in common seminars and research stays. Further elements of the educational programme comprise of presentations of proved external experts, lectures and especially workshops, in which the students from one research field explain their methodological approaches to the other members in practical demonstrations in the respective laboratories. With those means, the students are guided towards a broader horizon with respect to professional (interdisciplinarity), communicative (multilinguality) and social (internationality) experience. This international research training group is the first one between France, Luxemburg and Germany in Natural Sciences and makes it possible for the students to achieve a bilateral university degree (co-tutelle).
