The increasing need for accurate models describing global change requires exact data about the parameters as the bases for such models. This again requires detailed (quantitative) properties, so-called proxy variables, for information about these parameters. In EUROPROX, a wide variety of Dutch and German research groups from the universities of Bremen, Utrecht and Amsterdam join efforts to fulfil these requirements. Research activities focus on three closely related subjects: A) palaeoceanographic proxies as the key to palaeoenvironment';' B) alteration of primary proxy signals by diagenesis';' and C) application of proxies to Earth history.
Using a multi-proxy approach the usability of existing and new proxies is being investigated in order to develop more detailed and exact paleoceanographic models for the Quaternary. A major research topic is the interrelation of biotic and abiotic factors that control proxies for estimation of water properties. Furthermore, EUROPROX aims at extracting proxy data from rock sequences as old as Cretaceous and use these data in the reconstruction of the paleoenvironment, applying information on the usability of proxies in the Recent.
The PhD education programme of EUROPROX aims at establishing a highly qualified advanced study, stimulated by a network of joint teaching activities between the institutes involved. A broad post-graduate study programme exists within the frameworks of ECOLMAS (European Graduate College in Marine Sciences) and the Netherlands Research School of Sedimentary Geology (NSG), thus preventing narrow specialisation. Cooperative training is supported by the transfer of PhD students to a laboratory of a foreign working group for at least six months.
