The research training group "Images of the Past in Europe" is mainly concerned with the constructional character of such images in European historiography, literature, and the fine arts, from antiquity to the present. One major focus is on the production of these constructions (e.g. the linguistic viz. artistic appropriation and modification of traditions, the choice of media and modes, the attitudes towards the question of fact and fiction etc.)';' another major focus is on the social functions of these images and on the impact they had on their contemporary and later recipients (e.g. the intention to create and establish identities, the inclusion of the self and the exclusion of the other, the image of man in society, etc.). In this fairly wide-raging area of research in which individual projects are linked by a question common to them all (the "what, how, and why" of the constructions of the past), work is concentrated on four areas: on the relationship between fact and fiction';' the creation of identities';' internal and external views of European history';' and on the place and image of man in images of the past.
