GRK 826:  Trace Analysis of Elemental Species: Development of Methods and Applications

Subject Area Analytical Chemistry
Term from 2002 to 2011
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 273527

The aim of the research training group of highly qualified graduated students by university teachers from chemistry, physics, geosciences, atmospheric sciences, biology, and medicine is an interdisciplinary education in the elemental species analysis for different applications and their specific instrumental developments. There is still a substantial need for further research work in the field of trace analysis of elemental species. Excellent preconditions for such a research training program exist in Mainz because of the high competence in analytical knowledge by various disciplines at the University Mainz and the Max Planck Institute of Chemistry and because of the great variety of different instrumental equipment available. The determination of the chemical form, in which an element exists (elemental species), became increasing importance during the last few years in life sciences, geosciences, material sciences, and environmental investigations so that elemental speciation is an excellent tool for an interdisciplinary cooperation. Whereas in the past, elemental speciation has been preferably carried out in an isolated research area, it is one of the important aims of this program to do it within an interdisciplinary network.
