3D effects of seismic ground motion in the Taipei Basin and implications for hazard and risk

Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

During the last century several large earthquakes affected the city of Taipei in northern Taiwan. Today, about 3 million people live in the city of Taipei which is the home of many companies. As the city is located on a complex sedimentary basin earthquakes produce ground shaking due to so-called surface waves that can be very dangerous, especially for high rise buildings and bridges. Therefore, a deep understanding of the propagation of seismic waves in the Taipei basin is very important. In this project we simulated the propagation of seismic waves for the Taipei basin. Such simulations are computationally very costly and can only be performed on supercomputers. Because of its dense network of seismic stations and the large data base of recorded earthquakes numerical simulations can be compared with observations, which makes the Taiwan area to an unique testing case. Our simulation results showed that the application of such numerical modeling is capable to reproduce the observed ground motions within the basin. We found that earthquakes produce strong surface waves and the main affected areas within the basin vary with the location of the earthquakes. We also extended the observations by simulating scenario earthquakes and showed that numerical simulations provide valuable information to improve existing building codes. Our project showed that numerical simulation of earthquakes can reliably describe ground motions in sedimentary basins. Therefore, the methods applied in this project are appropriate to simulate earthquakes for other cities in the world that are located on sedimentary basins in seismically active regions. For regions with a small data base of observed earthquakes numerical simulations on supercomputers are the only way to calculate the impact of earthquakes. This would allow to improve existing building codes and to mitigate damage of future large earthquakes.
