Project Details
Coordination project of the Priority Program SPP1819 - Rapid evolutionary adaptation
Subject Area
Evolution and Systematics of Plants and Fungi
Term
from 2015 to 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 274762173
The SPP1819 "Rapid Evolutionary Adaptation - Potential and Constraints" integrates theoretical analyses with empiricial studies of rapid adaptation and evolution in pro- and eukaryotes. To this end, interdisciplinary approaches from evolutionary biology, population genetics and ecology will be employed. Current DNA sequencing technologies and corresponding bioinformatics tools will be used for the study of genetic variation. The coordination project is responsible for achieving the overall SPP goals. The activities and objectives of the coordination project include (1) the the administration of the priority program including the reporting and the planning of different activities in close coordination with the steering committee of the SPP. (2) The support of information exchange and the scientific communication by organising annual SPP meetings and topical workshops. At the annual meetings, projects and new results will be presented and the networking between SPP members enabled. Topical workshops will be organized by SPP members with a competence in theoretical modeling and quantitative analysis of evolutionary and ecological research questions in order to improve the skills and competence of young scientists. (3) The training of SPP scientists. This will be achieved by developing and teaching a training module on reproductive research for the topics represented in the SPP1819. The training module will be offered as workshops and the handouts, computer programs and data sets will be made available. Both activities are expected to contribute to a high quality of research results. (4) The implementation of a website for the presentation of individual projects and results to increase the visibility of the SPP1819 for the interested public. In addition, the website will be the main medium for information exchange between the annual meetings (https://dfg-spp1819.uni-hohenheim.de/). Additional tasks of the coordination project are (5) the establishment of networks with other national and international research activities and (6) the improvement of gender equality and career perspectives of young scientists.
