Genre and confessional strife: Nuremberg-Antwerp 1500-1570. From Dürer and the Beham Brothers to Dirk Vellert and Jan van Amstel.

The main aim of the project is to gain information about the way Nuremberg genre-art in the wake of Dürer influenced the production of genre-motifs in contemporary Antwerp, and especially the emerging art of genre-painting. This is achieved by a three-level approach, focussing on material transport and iconographic transfer of genre-topics from Nuremberg to Antwerp between 1500 and 1570 as well as on the "trade" in religious allusions. So far, the creative impulse, novelty and influence of the Nuremberg production hat not been systematically researched and neither has the considerable role it played in the development of genre-painting been sufficiently acknowledged.The topic is investigated with special regard to confessional conflicts, as genre-art at that period, far from simply depicting 'reality', always conveys religious resp. theological subtexts and meanings.
